SAVE THE DATE!!!! HARRISON’S 45TH REUNION JULY 15 AND 16, 2011 Dear Warriors, It may seem as if it’s a year early to you, but we want to make certain that you have plenty of time to mark your calendars! Can you believe that we’re nearing 45 years since we left the halls of Harrison High School as fresh-faced teenagers ready to take on the world? (It’s true ~ we did the math.) There were so many new things to learn about and experience. Why, there was even talk of putting a man on the moon! There was a “conflict” half a world away, and the British were invading our music. (There was something about them, though. That long hair and all!) But never fear ~ the important things were still intact: the Double R (are there better onion rings anywhere?); the Daughter; the Surf Club (Who’s playing ~ the Villains? Or should we go to the Outside Inn to hear The Crescents?); Hartke Pool; West Side Nut Club Fall Festival (Mmmmm ~ candy apples!). Gas was $.25 a gallon ~ we could cruise all night on $1.00. Time passed, and our lives changed, but somehow in our hearts and minds we still think & feel as if we’re 18. Bet you can still sing along with all of your favorite songs, word fo r word! Many of us have gathered together to reminisce about those Good Ol’ Days, and we had a wonderful time! Others have said we’d “wait till the next one.” Well, here’s The Next One, and we’d love to see YOU ~ whether again or for the first time! So, mark your calendars. Friday, July 15, 2011 / Pre-Party at the Pub Saturday, July 16, 2011 / Harrison High School Class of '66 *BEST CLASS EVER* Reunion at the Casino Aztar All of these will be in Evansville, and you will receive more specifics at a later date. If you have any changes in your contact information or know of anyone else whose information has changed, please inform: Candy (Clark) Cox -OR- Terry (Rosenblatt) Klitzner johnandcandy@sbcglobal.net klitzner@san.rr.com

Vaughn was "the" centerfielder. The only one who knew I only threw one curve ball all season. He got me in shape running, running after practice. He was the best athlete, but more importantly what a a great guy! He will live on in all of those he touched. T Byrd

Harrison High School teammate Bob Winchell put it simply: Vaughn Wedeking was the best all-around athlete he ever saw.

While Winchell went on to win the Big Ten shot put title four consecutive years for Indiana University's track and field team, Wedeking was the starting point guard on Jacksonville University's men's basketball team that finished second in the 1970 NCAA Tournament.

"There is nothing he couldn't do," Winchell said.

Wedeking, who was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on March 25 in Indianapolis, died in his sleep on July 10 at age 60.

As a senior at Harrison in 1967, Wedeking led the state of Indiana with a 90.9 free-throw percentage and won the 440-yard dash at the state track meet. He also played for the Evansville team that won the Pony League World Series baseball championship in 1964.

"He led the team in steals," Winchell said. "Nobody could throw him out."

"He was my baby brother," said Wedeking's sister, Colleen Dubber. "I'll miss him terribly."

In 2005, Wedeking had to sell his dental practice in Portland, Ore., because he had contracted fronto-temporal dementia.

Dayle Wedeking, Vaughn's wife, accepted the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame honor on his behalf. He was unable to make the trip because of his illness.

At Jacksonville, Wedeking gained Little All-America honors (for players under 6 feet) and was enshrined in JU's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

"To me, great athletes are different," Winchell said. "That have a tenacity that is almost obsessive-compulsive."

There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony for Wedeking at 3 p.m. CDT on July 31 in Cheatham Hall at the World Forestry Center in Portland.

Locally, there will be a Celebration of Life ceremony from 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Wright Administration Building, in Forum No. 2, at the University of Southern Indiana.

"Vaughn was that one person that everyone was drawn to, not only because of his athletic ability, but because of his great personality and intellect," said Harrison classmate Jon Siau, who is currently an art teacher and girls' golf coach at North. "We will all miss him."

Siau heard the story of Seattle resident Mike Rosen, who was visiting his mother in Portland at the same facility where Wedeking was recently being cared for.

"He saw this man, who he later learned was Vaughn, sitting completely helplessly, with an Indiana basketball in his hand," Siau said.

"At the dinner table, he was slowly turning the ball that he clutched."

My son Matt, & his fiancé Seema Shah have been working in the city of Colonia on Yap Island in The Federated States of Micronesia for the past 19 months.  Matt is working for their hospital system and Seema is an attorney with their State Supreme Court.  They are due to return in early 2010 and get married in Bloomington, Indiana where they met when they both attended Indiana University.

Matt is a graduate of Indiana University - Bloomington (class of 2004) where he also lettered in football.  Seema grew up in Munster, Indiana (near Chicago) and is a graduate of IU Bloomington & IUPUI Law School in Indianapolis.

Several months ago, they entered an online contest sponsored by one of the premier event planners in Indianapolis.  The prize includes a free wedding planner and photography.  Their video was selected as one of the 3 finalist and is now open to voting thru April 15th.  You can vote 1 time / day.  Please go to http://aprilfosterevents.com/blog/ to view the video and vote for Seema+Matt.  If you can help a former classmate out, I would appreciate you voting every day and forwarding the link to any of your network contacts who can help.

Please note that only one vote from a computer ip address / day will register & there seems to be a 24 hour lag time for registering your votes from one day to the next.

8   General Category / General Discussion / Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research  on: January 22, 2009, 08:31:36 PM

Dear Friends/Family,

Happy New Year!  We hope that this year is one of health and much happiness for you and your family.

Peter is now into his third year of Parkinson's Disease.  So many of you generously supported our fund raising efforts for the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research through Peter's running of the 2008 Boston Marathon.  Peter had a very respectable time qualifying him for the 2009 Boston Marathon and is well into training to repeat his '08 feat. Hopefully the mile after mile and day after day repetition does not feel too much like the movie Groundhog Day.   Barring an injury, Peter plans on showing up at the starting line on April 20th to grind out the 26+ miles with TeamFox.  And this is where I come in, making a fund raising appeal on behalf of Peter and millions of others with Parkinson's Disease who are desperate for a cure.

We have chosen to fund raise for the Michael J Fox Foundation because 100% of the donations received go directly into PD research.  The research funded by Fox already has yielded promising results not only for PD but also Muscular Sclerosis, ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Alzheimers, and juvenile diabetes.  This is a remarkable foundation that fosters groundbreaking work which will benefit many millions of people over time.  So I am asking you to be generous by donating either with a check or online to support Peter's Run for the Cure in April.

Donations by check can be made payable to The Michael J Fox Foundation and sent to us at 14 Harris St, Belmont, MA 02478.

Donations can be made online by going to www.teamfox.org and then clicking on Find a Member or Event.
Fill in the Member information with Peter Bleiberg, Belmont, MA, within 1 mile of 02478  and click on Submit.
Click on Bleiberg when the search is complete to reach Peter's Home Page.
On Peter's Home Page, click on Contribute and complete the information for a donation on the next page that appears; click on Submit.
Review the information and click on Submit again.
Please fill in the final page, allowing your name(s) to appear on Peter's Home Page.

We are sorry that there are so many steps for donating online and that you cannot access Peter's Home Page directly, but the process moves along quickly.  Rest assured  that the Fox Foundation  will not hound you for additional donations if you use this convenient site.

We thank you deeply for your ongoing support with donations to The Michael J Fox Foundation and with your invaluable kindness to us in dealing with this terrible disease.  Peter and I appreciate both more than we can possibly express.

With gratitude,
Sallye Fink Bleiberg
